This week I met with Carolyn from Keeping Abreast’s office in Norwich to hear about how their charity is supporting women who are considering or going through breast reconstruction following a breast cancer diagnosis.
Each year, approximately 56,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed, equating to more than 150 cases daily. As the most prevalent cancer in the UK, breast cancer accounts for 15% of all newly reported cancer cases (Breast Cancer UK).
Keeping Abreast (KA) is a charity which provides information, support, practical assistance, and guidance to individuals considering breast reconstruction by facilitating the sharing of others' experiences, improving the quality of care for those recovering from breast reconstruction and raising awareness of Keeping Abreast throughout the United Kingdom as well as advocating for and supporting the establishment of more KA groups nationwide.
KA was founded in September 2007 by breast cancer patients Anna Beckingham and Beverley Birritteri, along with Breast Reconstruction nurse specialist Ruth Harcourt. They recognised a significant need for women at various stages of breast cancer treatment - from those newly diagnosed and considering mastectomy, to those further along in their journey exploring reconstructive surgery- to have the opportunity to connect with other women who have shared similar experiences. This supports women in making well-informed decisions regarding their potential pursuit of breast reconstruction.
KA offers a national network of volunteers ready to provide support and advice. Undoubtedly, a breast cancer diagnosis is a scary thing, and so KA creates a relaxed and casual environment for discussions on all aspects of breast reconstruction. Women have the opportunity to connect with other women who have gone through similar experiences, and can view the results of reconstructive surgery, access information, support, and practical assistance.
Sometimes it’s a simple as getting answers to your questions from individuals who have dealt with similar issues. KA hosts informative talks from professionals in breast reconstruction and related procedures, as well as overall well-being. Additionally, KA distributes Pink Packs and Comfort & Care Bags to local hospitals and cancer centres for their breast reconstruction patients.
From small meaningful gestures to supporting women and their families through life-changing decisions, I am so glad KA are there to help.
